Mage overview

The Mage starts with Fireball and 215 health and has the biggest area damage in the game: Blizzard, Flamestrike, Arcane Explosion, Blast Wave and Cone of Cold are all in its 13-spell pool, the largest of any class. The blurb is honest about the cost: "nothing to hide behind". Frost Nova and Ice Barrier are the defensive tools to look for.

Strengths

  • Largest spell pool (13 spells)
  • Huge area damage from Blizzard, Flamestrike and Blast Wave
  • Frost Nova roots everything around you; Polymorph turns enemies into sheep

Watch out for

  • Fragile once enemies reach you
  • Early levels rely on single-target Fireball

From our playtest

Our first Undead Mage run ended at 0:41 on level 3 after we walked into a kobold group near Jasperlode Mine. The class punishes contact much harder than the Warrior did.

Mage spell pool

Every level-up deals three cards. A new spell card takes one of your 6 spell slots; an upgrade card improves a spell you already know and ranks it up. Card rarity (Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary) decides how strong the bonus is. These are the 13 spells the Mage can be offered:

  1. FireballStarting spell
  2. Frostbolt
  3. Arcane MissilesEarly pick
  4. Frost NovaEarly pick
  5. Arcane ExplosionEarly pick
  6. BlizzardEarly pick
  7. Flamestrike
  8. Fire Blast
  9. Cone of Cold
  10. Blast Wave
  11. Pyroblast
  12. Ice BarrierEarly pick
  13. Polymorph

Early picks are our suggestions for a first run. Spells cast on their own: you only move, and each spell fires when it is off cooldown and enemies are in range.

Mage talent trees

Talents are permanent and per class. Every run pays your Mages talent experience (time survived, kills, bosses, a win, and more in harder zones); the first point arrives at 80 experience and a class can earn 51 points. A new row opens for every 5 points spent in a tree, and the milestones at 10, 20 and 30 points change how your spells behave. Respecs are free, and the Armory keeps three specs.

Values written as X grow with each rank; the game shows the exact number when you point at a talent. Use theMage talent calculator to plan points.

Best race for a Mage

Racials cast on their own, so they matter more here than in the original game. The Mage can be: Human, Gnome, Undead, Troll.

Alliance

Gnome

Expansive Mind (-8% cooldowns), +20% luck for rarer cards, and Escape Artist roots nearby enemies every 20 sec.

Horde

Undead

Will of the Forsaken immunity near death covers the glass-cannon risk.

Alliance

Human

+10% experience for more cards and Perception damage windows.

Mage gear set and weapons

Bosses drop Mage gear that stays with the class for good: 54 pieces across nine slots and six rarities, from Elwynn Forest commons to Naxxramas legendaries. The set name changes with each tier:

Apprentice'sMagister'sArcanistNetherwindFrostfire

Weapon line:

Apprentice's StaffMagister's StaffArcanist's StaffStaff of DominanceAtiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian

Where each tier drops: gear and drop tables.

A first Mage run

Never let the first group touch you. Keep a gap, take Frost Nova or Arcane Explosion as an emergency button, and add Ice Barrier when it appears.

Pick a race from the list above, enter Elwynn Forest, and aim to see the first boss, Hogger, at 3:00. Even a short run pays talent experience. Compare with the other classes: Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Warlock, Druid.

FAQ

How much health does the Mage start with in Azeroth Survivors?

215 health. That is #4 of 9 classes; the range runs from 165 (Warlock) to 245 (Paladin). Every level then adds 9 maximum health, 3% damage and 0.08 health per second.

What spell does the Mage start with?

Fireball. Every level-up deals three cards from the Mage's 13-spell pool, and a new spell takes one of 6 spell slots.

What are the Mage capstone talents?

Arcane Power (Arcane), Pyroclasm (Fire), Summon Water Elemental (Frost). A capstone needs 30 points in its tree; a class can earn 51 talent points in total.

Which race is best for a Mage?

There is no fixed best race, but Gnome and Undead and Human have the most useful racials for this class: Expansive Mind (-8% cooldowns), +20% luck for rarer cards, and Escape Artist roots nearby enemies every 20 sec.

Is the Mage good for beginners?

We rate it Hard to learn. Low health or melee range make early mistakes costly; play a Warrior or Paladin first if you want an easier start. This is our assessment of starting health, range and self-protection, not a win-rate ranking.
